One day I watched a foreigner being interviewed by a television news reporter while exiting customs in CKS Airport; she said she couldn’t find any tourism information about Taiwan in all of the traveling agencies in her country. That’s when I came up with the idea of doing this podcast, I like to introduce this interesting island, especially from a foreigner's perspective.

Catherine is a young lady from Florida; she actually asked the school she works for to send her to somewhere remote in Taiwan, brave girl. Her meeting with her Taiwanese friend Miranda was like destiny, they became real close friends and taught English and shared their lives together. Catherine will leave the island very soon and move on to her next destination, but we are sure that their friendship will not fade no matter where their futures might take them.

David is originally from Denmark and has been working and living in Taiwan for the last 5 years. He accepted our invitation and arranged a lovely little tour of his operations in the hospital. We had the privilege of examining equipments that are worth millions and millions, and after his introductions, we were thrilled to find the advancements of brain research here on our island. Most of the people of Taiwan are probably not aware that we are rank very high on the charts globally in this area.

David's leisure activities are diving and parties. Looking good is also very important for our well-groomed guest this week. We are very happy and fortunate to meet such stylish and outgoing new friend.

David來自丹麥，在台灣工作已經五年。他答應接受我們的訪問，並在訪問當天安排了一個小行程，讓我們參觀他工作的醫院和設備，並介紹價值數百萬美元的醫療儀器。在他的解說下，我們很驚訝的發現，台灣的腦部手術與研究，在世界上名列前茅，顯然台灣還有許多不為人知的面向等待被發掘。

It is quite a thrilling experience talking with an enthusiastic entrepreneur, and Elisa shared his thoughts about Taiwan without holding anything back. Especially when he spoke about promoting Taiwan to the foreigners from all over the world, also helping the foreigners adapt, especially those whom have made Taiwan their new residency. There is a lot of space for improvements when it comes to our government and he would encourage the foreign friends here to participate so their opinions and feelings can be regarded seriously and taken care of effectively, another main objective for our show ever since we started a year ago.

We would like our listeners out there to help us promote “What’s up in Taiwan”, so more people can be heard through our program. We also welcome any letters of comments and suggestions as well as voice mail, so we can always be bettering this little podcast.

Elias Ek is originally from Sweden, he has traveled and resided in many countries such as the US and Japan, that is until he met his Taiwanese wife and moved here. The Taiwanese entrepreneurial spirit went very well with Elias personality; he generated a passion for new businesses and ideas. He felt that starting a personal business is rarely welcomed and encouraged as much in his mother country.

Elias and his wife founded “Enspyre” 4 years ago. His wife passed away from a sudden heart attack on the way of meeting a client a little while back. Still, Elias didn’t pack up and leave this island; he is still working very hard on this project that he and his darling wife started. We hope the very best of things for Elias and “Enspyre” in this New Year!

尹克勤先生來自瑞典，很年輕就旅局美國、日本，直到認識了他的台灣妻子，便來台定居。台灣人對於做生意和創業的熱情使得尹克勤住在台灣如魚得水，他非常熱衷創業和想新點子，但是在他的家鄉瑞典，“自己創業”是很少能得到熱烈回應的。

四年前他與妻子成立了“安石行動商務中心”，不久在一次客戶拜訪，他的愛妻竟心臟病發過世，但尹克勤並沒有因此消沈或是打包回家，他很努力的經營他和妻子的寶貝公司，希望在新的一年，尹克勤和他的“安石行動商務中心”能鴻圖大展！

It’s Christmas time again; this is the second Christmas since we started this podcast. What can we say? Time flies when you’re having fun! Last year, we had Father Jerry on our show for Christmas, and it was truly the greatest Christmas gift, also the 1st time we felt that we were on the right track.

Father Jerry mentioned his brother Barry on the show and we had decided that for this year, we’ll have Father Barry celebrating Christmas with us. Little did we know that it took over 2 hours of driving into the mountain of Ju-Don to meet him in person, and worth every second, not to mention the beautiful scenery along the way. We got to interview Father Barry Martinson S. J., both Martinson brothers have dedicated their lives to servicing Taiwan for over 35 years, Thank you both so very much and Merry Christmas!

We couldn't stay for lunch with Father Barry, this is the persimmon he gave us for our trip. One of the many delicious fruits of Taiwan.

耶誕節又接近了，這是我們第二個耶誕節。去年，我們收到最好的耶誕禮物是丁松筠神父的訪問。今年，我們特地在耶誕前夕訪問丁神父的弟弟，丁松青神父。

丁松青神父在竹東的清泉部落傳教，距離台北兩個小時的車程，沿途經過美麗的台灣山林景色，穿過一條單線、無照明的隧道，來到了彷彿世外桃源的清泉教堂。

兩位丁神父各自在台灣奉獻了35年的光陰，我們僅在此致謝！並祝各位耶誕節快樂！

Tony Masalonis if from The U.S. and currently working in Taiwan as an aviation safety consultant. He is very serious about studying Chinese during his leisure hours and gave us a very detailed explanation of his Chinese name during the interview. He enjoys Taiwan very much and shared his love for lu-wei ( a Taiwanese dish with meat or fowl stewed with soy sauce and strained before serving) and the Kinmen and Matsu Islands.

This interview was conducted in terminal 2 of Song-Shan Airport, a place where even many locals are unaware of its existence. Mr. Masalonis gave us a brief introduction of the history and background of the building.

Tony(his web site) also writes as a hobby. The following is a sample of his work which he tries to capture the harmony of nature and urban intenseness that is Taipei and Taiwan.

"The Wind partners with streetlights to light green leaves into sparkle.
But the bus’s bright green numbers outshine it all.
Despite a high pitched dog, and subdued traffic hum
There’s a relative stillness, peaceful waiting

Back at eye level the haggard hookers hello-hello aggressively
At clearly Asiafied foreigners with faces creased from sorrow and joy of adapting, of being adopted, of wincing quizically,
mouths curled garishly from pronouncing x and q

Tony 在台灣擔任航空安全顧問。平常工作之餘，他很認真的學習中文，訪問中並解釋了他自己選擇的中文名字：嗎簡謄。他很喜歡台灣的滷味並推薦馬祖。

本次訪問在松山機場第二航站進行，很多人都不知道台北松山機場有第二航站，Tony也在訪問中簡單介紹了一下松山第二航站的背景。

閒暇時間，Tony還喜歡寫詩、作詞，他特別寄了一首描寫他的台灣（台北）印象的詩，有興趣的朋友不妨將它翻譯出來。

Robin Erik Ruizendaal is the Administrator of the Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theatre Museum; he has been living in Taiwan for the last 13 years. Dr. Ruizendaal earned a Ph.D. in Chinese studies from Leiden University in the Netherlands over 20 years ago, and he has been doing research on puppet theaters ever since, including extensive fieldwork in China and South-East Asia.

He is also the Administrator as well as the Artistic Director of the Taiyuan Puppet Theatre Company and Museum. He has written and directed quite a number of plays for both actors and puppets. His plays have been performed in over 20 countries.

In November 2005, the TTT Puppet Center moved to a permanent residence generously donated by Mrs. Lin, the widow of late Mr. Lin Liu-Hsin. In return for such generosity, the Center changed its name to Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theatre Museum.

The Museum is located on Xi-Ning North Road, Dadaocheng, one of the oldest districts of Taipei and just a few steps from the Danshui Pier off historical Dihua Street. There are over 7,000 puppets in their collection, and there are over 300 performances each year. The show being presented this particular month is "The Child in the Elevator" about time travel; please check it out if you can.

Last but not least, we would like to show our appreciation for Caroline Gluck for her introduction to Robin so we may complete this Interview. Caroline Is a journalist with BBC. Although she has declined our Invitation as a guest for a future episode, we are still hoping she might change her mind.

羅賓先生來自荷蘭，是荷蘭萊登大學漢學博士，他對中國布偶產生興趣，研究範圍遍及兩岸與東南亞，在台灣居住了13年，目前擔任林柳新紀念偶戲博物館館長與台原偶戲團藝術總監。

林柳新紀念偶戲博物館位於大稻埕，鄰近淡水碼頭的西寧北路上，成立於2005年11月，是由林柳新的夫人林錦華女士捐贈。該館收藏各式各樣的布偶七千餘個，每年的大小演出近三百場，這個月將推出“電梯裡的小孩”，歡迎朋友們前往觀賞。

Rebecca is originally from London; currently the legal representative of a Japanese company that is distributing parts to the new Taiwan High Speed Rail, which is being constructed right now. She has been living in Taipei for 2 years; her status is single and unable to speak much Chinese. This is how she introduced herself in her e-mail to us after agreeing to do the interview. We were really anxious to meet her in person.

Rebecca is extremely ambitious about her career; she accepted this job due to the uprising of China. She wanted to better her understandings of eastern and western law through this experience. She shared many of her observations during the interview.

Scuba diving at Green Island is the event that Rebecca enjoys doing at the moment. She also recommended Jioufen as the starting point for understanding the traditional scenery of Taiwan.

Rebecca來自倫敦，受雇於日本公司，是負責台灣高鐵興建工程的日方法律代表，在台時間兩年半，不會說中文，目前單身。這是她答應受訪後，在email中的自我介紹，沒見面就令人充滿好奇。

Jeana came to Taiwan 2 years ago to attend undergraduate school. In order for her boyfriend Jamali to learn more about Taiwan, she started researching for information about Taiwan over the internet. In Jamali's opinion, his favorite program which can really give you a real honest image of the island is the one you are listening to now.

A little over a month ago, Jamali came to Taiwan as well. He contacted us by e-mail and accepted our invitation for an interview. He is also the first guest we have had from the Caribbean.

Taiwan only has diplomatic relations with 24 countries in the world; St. Vincent is one of them. October 27th marked the 27th birthday of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Jeana兩年前來台灣念大學，她從事影像工作的男朋友 Jamali 為了能多認識台灣，便在網路上找一些相關資訊與介紹。其中他最喜歡，並且最能感受台灣真實面貌的，就是你現在收聽的節目。

一個多月前，Jamali也來到台灣。他用Email與我們連絡，同時接受我們的訪問。這是我們第一次訪問到來自加勒比海的朋友。

One of our listeners, a student at Yang Ming University invited Henry to be a judge in the Toastmaster English Speech Competition. There, we met Linda who was one of the other judges and asked her to be in our show.

Linda has been in Taiwan for 25 years now, volunteering for many non-profit organizations. Currently, she works in The Garden of Hope Foundation which is working to end sexual abuse and domestic violence. We did the interview in her house, the same place that housed the many abused girls she helped to rescue.

We pay our respects to Linda for her devotion to Taiwan.

Tomer(front) is originally from Israel, worked as a chef in New York and fell in love with his current wife Jun(back) from Malaysia during their time there. After a trip together in Asia, Tomer returned to New York while Jun went and visited her relatives back home. When Jun attempted to return to New York to meet with Tomer, her visa was denied by the U.S. customs. Also because of Tomer's nationality, he is unable to enter Malaysia. Due to all of these unpredicted elements, they decided to meet in Taiwan.

This meant that they had to start everything from scratch, and brand new way of life had to emerge. They supported each other faithfully, and after 5 years of hard work and adjusting to the lifestyles In Taiwan, Tomer is now a co-owner of Sababa Pita Bar, and formed the rock band "Neon" with his wife Jun as the lead singer. They are also the proud parents of their beautiful baby girl named Mika.

Neon's first album will be released by January 2007, produced by one of the most well-known musicians in Taiwan, Mr. Bobby Chen. Sababa Pita Bar might have just opened very recently, but there are already people saying great things about it on their personal blogs.

Tomer（前）來自以色列，在紐約開餐廳並認識了來自馬來西亞的Jun（後），兩人相戀。一次亞洲的旅行後，Tomer返回紐約，Jun回馬來西亞探親。當Jun準備回紐約和Tomer見面時，美國政府卻沒有批准Jun的入境加簽，而Tomer也因為他的國籍，無法進入馬來西亞。因為這些意外，他們約在台灣碰面。

這幾乎是將一切歸零，而選擇重新開始的決定。經過五年的適應、努力與相互支持，現在Tomer開了自己的餐廳Sababa Pita Bar，和Jun組了自己的樂團Neon，還擁有一個寶貝女兒Mika。

Neon將於2007年1月發片，製作人是陳昇。Sababa Pita Bar雖然剛開幕，已經有網友在部落格裡報導了。

I think that Taiwan is a great place to live in as a Westerner, and certainly easier to adapt to than China or even Thailand. However, deep integration seems almost impossible, and it's hard to picture many futures for myself here.
One of Taiwan's problems seems to be its self-doubt, which I see as a positive thing about the country. Taiwan also seems to collect a lot of low quality expats (with many notable exceptions), due to the easy ride that foreigners are given and the good money to be made teaching English.

Daniel was originally from London; he gave up his job three years ago and started traveling around the world. We understand that he has been to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and China just to name a few. He had a personal website "Suitcasing", which is under construction at the moment, but you can see the passion he had for traveling.

The interview was done in a very relaxed fashion; Daniel talked about being a foreigner in Taipei, the different mannerism of the people between Taiwan and China, the pros and cons of blogging, the excellent hidden spots in the alleys of Taipei, and his general disappointment in the foreigners on the island.

Due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to play “Englishman in New York” preformed by Sting during the show, the song that played repeatedly in our heads after our interview with Mr. Wallace.

Daniel 來自英國，三年前放棄銀行的工作，開始旅遊，我們知道他去了馬來西亞、新加坡、泰國、昆明… 他的個人網站叫 suitcasting.com（目前暫時關閉），可以看出他對旅行的熱誠。

訪問在很放鬆的氣氛下進行，Daniel 談到一個外國人在台灣的感受、兩岸華人表現友誼的不同方式、寫部落格的優點與缺點、藏在台北巷弄裡的有趣的店鋪、還有，他對在台灣的外國人的普遍失望…

Daniel 其實是本節目最早的受訪者之一。訪問結束後，他來信表示當天表現的太客氣了，如果有機會重來，他會表達的更清楚。六個月後，我們又在他頂樓加蓋的公寓中見面，他還是很客氣，只是，這次他很直接。謝謝他花了兩次的時間，分享許多有趣的看法。

Nicholas is a 27 year-old young man from Canada who has only been in Taiwan for merely 7 weeks when we did the interview, but within that short time frame, he managed to visit all of the popular nightspots in Taipei.

Nick is currently employed by the Landis Taipei Hotel as the chef of La Brasserie Restaurant. This is certainly not a common position for someone his age. He feels that he was hired due to his training and experiences, and the willingness to try creative new ideas, as well as his easy going personality, and we have to agree. Any hotel owner would be delighted to have a chef that can cook as well as entertain the guests.

Nick talked to us about the fascinating similarities between sugar and glass before the interview, he can basically create anything with sugar that you can do with glass. He has once worked for over 30 continuous hours in extreme heat to build a life-sized eatable jukebox. We are looking forward to seeing more of his amazing creations in Taipei.

來自加拿大的Nicholas今年僅27歲，訪問當天抵達台灣才七個星期，但幾乎已經逛遍台北知名的夜店。

Nicholas受聘於亞都麗緻大飯店，擔任巴賽麗廳主廚。這個職位以他的年紀來說，絕對是非常年輕的。他自認受聘的原因除了他受過專業訓練、以及年輕人的敢於嘗試新點子，還有個性隨和。的確，我們覺得他非常有親和力。聘雇一位有才華的主廚，奉送公關能力，我想任何老闆都很樂意。

訪問前Nicholas與我們閒聊糖與玻璃奇妙的相似性，任何可以用玻璃製作的東西，他都能用糖製作出來。他曾經連續三十幾個小時，在高溫下用糖製作了一個實體大小，並且可以食用的音樂點唱機，希望以後能在台北看到他別出心裁的作品。

Words like excited and anxious are understatements when we found out we had the opportunity of interviewing a Russian model, even though she ended up at our meeting with her handsome husband.

Ekaterina Anatolievna Nikitina(A.K.A. KaiDi) moved to Taiwan with her then boyfriend and now husband. They are both part-time models, and as you can tell by their picture that they are more than qualified for the job. Photography is also one of KaiDi's many interests; here are some photos she took on her trip to Sun Moon Lake.

This is a link to her personal website if you are interested in checking out more of her work. KaiDi also told us that she is more than ready to take pictures of the beautiful Taiwanese girls on the weekends, contact her by e-mail if you would like to pose for her. She will even give you a disk of your pictures as a memento.

The ending music was provided to us by Miss Cincin Lee, the winner of The Golden Horse Award for best musical accompaniment in a film. The awarded song's title is "Meeting Spring Wind", a very traditional and popular folk song of Taiwan. We would like to express our appreciation for her consent of using the piece.

當我們知道要訪問一位來自俄羅斯的女模特兒，當然會有一種異常的興奮與期待，雖然最後她和一名帥哥同時出現...

Nikitina有一個中文名字凱娣（KaiDi）。她隨著當時的男友、現在的丈夫來台灣工作，兩人都是業餘的模特兒，看他們倆人的外表就很容易理解。KaiDi唯一的興趣是攝影，這裡是她所拍攝日月潭的照片。

還有 KaiDi的網站連結，有興趣的朋友，可以前往觀賞她的作品。KaiDi表示，如果有漂亮女生想在週末擔任她的免費模特兒，可以Email與她連絡，她會以拍攝完成的相片光碟相贈。

Here is a letter that Mr. Neumann passed on to us the following day of the interview; it is his views on Taiwanese health care. He asked us to present it for him, and it goes as follows:

My message to government and politicians:

The mandatory National Health Insurance and recently passed legislation to establish a retirement fund for employees at the expense of entrepreneurs is worth some praise, without much doubt, but do not let this be the beginning of copying the "cradle-to-grave" social care system that just now collapses in Germany after 125 years. Relieving people from performance pressure and self-responsibility will make them complacent and unfit for life. Do not lure them with false sentimentality; tell them the truth: Only the fear to fail keeps people alive and alert! Fear of existence and social pressure are the best guarantors for human efficiency! Sounds bitter- -but truth is like medicine; it MUST taste bitter, or it will not work! If you learn that from me, that only and nothing else, then I can pass away in peace, knowing that my 30 years of time on Taiwan were not wasted.

Mr. Dieter Neumann is the representative for the government of Hannover Germany in Taipei, and also the senior adviser of Hannover Pacific Corporation, which is responsible for some of the world's leading trade shows for information technology, telecommunications, software and services... such as CeBIT.

Mr. Neumann has been living in and out of Taiwan for the last 30 years; he mentioned that when he first got here, Sung-Chiang Road wasn’t even paved. He feels that the growth of the Taiwanese economy comes from the hard work of the people, as well as our “sexual” relationship with money, interesting, huh?

We have been very anxious to meet one of the many foreign businessmen from the Taipei World Trade Center, and through the introduction of Michael Turton, we had the privilege of completing this interview. Thanks again to Michael for all of his help. Because it is such a rare opportunity to have a guest such as Mr. Neumann, we want to present the interview in its entirety as much as possible, part 1 will be posted this week.

Dieter Neumann 先生是德國漢諾威市政府的駐台代表，同時也是漢諾威展覽會台灣辦事處 (Hannover Pacific Corp.) 的資深顧問，該公司承辦許多全球性的商展，其中包括全球最大的資訊通訊展 CeBIT ， CeBIT 每年都是資訊通訊科技的趨勢指標，科技迷應該非常熟悉。

Dieter Neumann 先生陸陸續續往返或居住台灣已三十年。他剛到台北時，松江路還沒有鋪柏油，他覺得台灣的經濟成長，除了人民勤奮，還有華人視錢如『性』有關，很勁爆吧！

It is a little surprising that someone as young and attractive as Olivia has such passion for the crowded and noisy night markets of Taiwan. She has a simple reason for her love of shopping at these lively spots, the opportunity of bargaining, bargaining, and more bargaining.

We can tell how sincere she is about her hobby when we met at the marketplace. Even though the primary objective was doing the interview, she purchased a belt, a pair of shoes. We also had a very reasonably priced meal of Thai food before we turned on the microphone.

It’s true that there is no place like the Taiwanese night markets in the world, and there is at least one in every city and every town of our island. You can get a fair selection of almost everything you need on a daily basis, and a great variety of Taiwanese cuisine, or even just to hang out and kill time with your buddies, the Taiwanese night markets will satisfied your every need.

Olivia不是夜店女王，她是夜市女王。像Olivia這樣年輕、具吸引力的女孩，卻深深被喧鬧、擁擠、五味雜陳的台灣夜市吸引，因為在夜市血拼，可以不停地玩一個附帶的遊戲，殺價！殺價！殺價！

而且，Olivia是真心的喜歡逛夜市，雖然是約好做訪問，但是她還是精打細算的買了一條皮帶、一雙鞋子。還有，訪問前一餐經濟實惠的泰國料理。

的確，全世界找不到類似台灣夜市這樣的地方，幾乎每一個城鎮都會有一個、甚至好幾個。無論你想買任何生活必需品，或是想吃豐富多樣的台灣小吃，甚至只是想與朋友打發時間，台灣夜市都會滿足你的需要。

If you followed our suggestion from last week and typed in “Taiwan Blog” as a keyword in any search engine, then you won’t be unfamiliar with the title David's Guide to Taiwan, so here is yet another blogger for you this week.

David resides on Banciao of Taipei County, and he asked us to meet at the top of Taipei County Hall for the interview. Although Banciao is only a river away from the city of Taipei, but we haven’t had the chance of visiting it for a while, and the improvements really astonished us. Wide streets, convenient MRT system, merging of the residential and business districts, all these are just some of the reasons why David decided to live in Taipei County.

After we finished the interview, David stayed to take some pictures, clearly another interest of his. We urge everyone to visit his blog site and perhaps bookmarking it, David's blog is very considerate and easy-going, much like his own personality. He has helped many of us in gathering information about Taiwan; it can really assist you in many ways.

This week is the 2nd half of our interview with Michael Turton.

This interview was actually conducted over 6 months ago, and the reason for the delay is that we didn’t know how do deal with the vast amount of information given by Michael. The interview was originally over 50 minutes in length, and the content also involved political topics, something we did not chose to talk about at that stage ( Because there was already way too much politics occupying our lives).

If you type in “Taiwan blog” on any search engine as a keyword, Michael Turton’s personal blog will always be on the 1st page of the results. And on the 2nd page, also on the 3rd page…and so forth and so forth, he is everywhere!

We posted a short 30 seconds promo right before we started running the show last November, and Michael Turton introduced us on his bog in less than 2 hours after the moment we clicked the upload button. God bless the man!

We have been subscribing RSS Feeds from many different blogs for a while now, which of course includes Michael’s "The View from Taiwan". If there are any articles marked unread on display; it’s almost always from Michael, completing this much work all by himself is simply incredible.

Michael has been living in Taiwan as a resident since 1989. He is now married to a Taiwanese wife with 2 beautiful children, and currently teaching in Chaoyang University.

A foreigner (although he probably doesn’t consider himself as a foreigner anymore) that has dedicated this much time, effort and energy to Taiwan makes this particular episode a must, there is no good reason to miss it!

Our listeners truly come from all over the world! This is becoming sort of the unofficial month for our supporters, sharing their feelings about Taiwan in the interviews.

The story is almost identical to that of Damon and Katherine. We have been receiving letters of support and useful comments from Matthias and his Taiwanese wife Angela since the early stages of “What’s up in Taiwan”. They met in Taiwan years ago and got married pretty quickly. Currently residing in Zürich, this was their vacation visiting family and friends, and we managed to get in touch for an interview.

We met at Angela’s brother’s coffee shop, where we were greeted by the warmest Taiwanese hospitality and free coffee. Matthias asked Angela if she cared to response first whenever we presented a question, a true gentleman. It might have been love at first sight over a decade ago, but we are sure the feelings have lasted. Speaking if “love at first sight”, you can pick up a little German lesson as a bonus for this episode.

Learning Chinese is certainly a global trend that has been really heating up recently, there are parents in New York forking out big money to hire Chinese baby-sitters so their children can grow up in a Chinese-speaking environment. There are many heated debates about learning traditional Chinese or simplified Chinese over the internet constantly. Matthias shared that 90% of the Chinese students in Germany decided to go to China; you can hear what he has to say being the minority.

Angela’s brother’s coffee is called KC Café in Taipei City; the phone number is (02)2393-6188. Pay them a visit, the coffee is excellent and there is free wireless internet access.

在Google找到這個連結，才知道What's up in Taiwan四月份曾被《數位時代》介紹過。

出於好奇，透過網路買了一本 Zinio 電子雜誌版本，台幣150元，30分鐘後已下載至我的Powerbook。

文章由謝哲豪執筆，謝先生在文中提及：“此播客在去年11月才開始經營，不到半年的時間，已經變成台灣播客的代表，也可以在iTunes網路音樂商店上訂閱收聽。看樣子我們的觀光局該好好想想，是不是需要用部落格或是播客來推廣台灣的觀光。”

感謝《數位時代》的推薦與介紹，但是他們將Henry與我混在一起了，這是大部分聽眾剛開始都有的誤會，Henry是What's up in Taiwan的主持人，十歲搬到美國居住，念完大學後回台灣工作，大家聽到極富磁性的聲音是他；至於我，則是這個podcast的製作人，沒住過美國，決定製作這個節目前，也沒認識半個外國人。

Damon is currently studying for his doctorate in Pharmiceuticals in Philadelphina, his wife Katherine is a Taiwanese-American working as a nurse.

Katherine discovered “What’s up in Taiwan” while going through the directory of iTunes Podcast and soon became a loyal listener. Every weekend, she would download the latest episode and share it with her husband. Maybe it’s somewhat of a comfort for her nostalgia, and to help Damon in his education in becoming the perfect Taiwanese son in-law. We have also been receiving letters of encouragement and helpful comments from the wonderful couple for quite sometime now.

Damon and Katherine decided to visit Taiwan in June; they made plans to tour around the island in just 9 days, but we managed to meet them for an interview in Taichung right before they departed for home. Damon’s introduction of Taiwan was very touching; we can tell he really did a great share of research as he traveled through out the island. He wanted to express some of the close observations of what the Taiwanese people have been feeling recently at the end of the interview, which we have posted earlier as a separate segment.

Jamii did a small recital at a local lounge bar as a favor for the owner who has been his good friend for over 20 years, and we were invited to attend. Although Jamii had a very limited space to perform, and the place was packed with customers chattering away while covered in cigarette smoke, he still delivered a wonderful show that was equivalent to a large stadium concert.

He still practices his violin skills at least 3 hours a day from what we heard, goes to show you that excellence doesn’t come easy in any field.

故事要從二十年前說起，年輕一點的網友大概不知道『蚱蜢』李恕權是誰了，但也許你看過一篇在網路上被多次轉寄的文章『五年後你在幹嘛？』。短文的作者李恕權，在亞洲一炮而紅的首張專輯『迴』，製作班底中有一位兩屆葛來美音樂獎的得主，也就是本集的受訪者，Jamii Szmadzinski。在八零年代的音樂場景中，New Music曾一度引領風騷，Jamii也是當時New Music的一個重要團體Shadowfax的小提琴手。

從來台擔任『蚱蜢』的演唱會樂手開始，Jamii展開了一段令他又愛又恨的台灣音樂之旅，他參與了許多可說是流行音樂里程碑的專輯製作，（例如潘越雲的“謝謝你曾經愛過我”），但過程中，他的音樂創意也受到嚴重的剽竊與侵佔。

這是一個音樂製作的灰色地帶，從事音樂編曲的朋友必定會有更深刻的體會。我分別聽過兩位重量級的編曲人向我抱怨過，某幾位大牌製作人，會在沒有旋律的情況下要求先編曲（是的！我沒有寫錯），然後在編好的音樂中即興出主旋律，於是便掛名作曲，一首歌的版權便占為己有，因為編曲是不享有版權的，一首暢銷曲的版稅或將來重新翻唱，都與編曲者無關。這些編曲人告訴我：“你去聽嘛，旋律其實已經都在裡面了！”這兩位重量級的編曲人，現在都已轉任製作。你比較能了解Jamii的感受了嗎？

不過Jamii畢竟是個純粹的音樂愛好者，一直到今天，他每天還是要練三個小時的琴。即便是應朋友之邀，在台北的小酒館內演出，酒客喧囂、煙味瀰漫，他還是百分之百的投入演出，這是我親眼所見。

The contents include music, culture, and a very interesting Sci-Fi audio novel. There is also an interview of Mark with the Deadpan Show if you want to get to know more about the Shogun of Taiwan.

We had the pleasure of meeting Mark’s lovely family before the interview, his son has been skeptical if there was anyone out there that are actually listening to the show that his father works so hard on, we were more than happy to be the proof of his efforts.

第一次用Taiwan這個關鍵字在iTunes裡搜尋Podcast，時間是2005年七月，當時就找到Mark Forman的Getting a Leg Up，以及Gem的[Misadventures in Taiwan]，他們毫無疑問是第一批從台灣發聲的Podcasters。

Mark來台灣已經十幾年，中文說的非常好，前兩年住在台北，正好遇上捷運動工的交通黑暗期，是他最糟的台灣經驗，搬到台中之後就非常愉快。自己開了公司、結婚、並且有一個很英俊的兒子，我們到訪的時候，Mark還用中文跟他兒子說：『你看！有人來訪問你爸爸！還說Podcast都沒人聽？』。

Starting a new life in any foreign country can be a tough task for anyone. Everything from filing taxes to buying groceries can be a problem if you don’t have the right resources to turn to. It just so happens that there is a group of hospitable foreigners in Taiwan that are more than willing to help, and they have been doing it for quite a while now.

Forumosa.com is administrated by Gus Adapon and Anthony van Dyck with other associates, it is a non-profit website aimed to help the westerners on the island from anything to everything. We have gotten our share of assistance from them in regards of finding interesting guests, recommending helpful links on the web, and there are plans of further calibrations if possible. It is almost like a database of “What’s up in Taiwan”.

We highly urge any new residents of Taiwan to sign up as soon as you can, it can help you get started, and perhaps you can help others later when they decide to make Taiwan their new homes.

The Labor Representative of Manila Economic and Cultural Office Mr. Reynaldo Gopez has been stationed in Taiwan for nearly 2 years. It is hard to believe that there are almost 96 thousands Pilipino workers in Taiwan until we heard it from him.

Mr. Gopez is a hardworking man that spends long hours in the office, he said he never had the opportunity to really absorb the island of Taiwan, but he feels that the young people here are very polite, and it is also a very safe place to stay.

We posted the show at this time in celebration of the independence day of The Philippine Islands (June 12th of every year). The M.E.C.O. Office always provide a special activity, and it is at Beishin elementary school in Taipei County this year. Scheduled on June 11th on a Sunday, everyone is welcomed.

馬尼拉經濟文化辦事處（Manila Economic and Cultural Office）主任Reynaldo Gopez派駐台灣將近兩年，如果不是他親自告訴我們，其實很難想像目前有將近九萬六千名菲律賓籍勞工在台灣工作。

Gopez先生相當忙碌，工作時間也很長，他說一直沒有機會在台灣旅遊，但他覺得這裡的年輕人很有禮貌，治安也很好。

這集節目的播出時間是為了配合菲律賓的獨立節（6月12日），每年馬尼拉經濟文化辦事處都會舉行特別的慶祝活動，今年是在台北縣新店的北新國小，時間是6月11日星期天，Gopez先生歡迎大家去玩。

It is always very lively during the weekends on Yongkang Street in Taipei. There are always long lines for the world famous Din Tai Fung Dumpling House to Ice Monster's mango slushy ice, not to mention the bookstores, cafes, and local stationary and novelty shops filled with unique characters. It is certainly one of the best spots to spend your weekends for the people of Taipei.

When it gets close to 7:30 on Saturday evenings, crowd starts to gather at Yongkang Parks, some are just curious bystanders, and some are devoted fans of SPOON de CHOP. The band’s set up in completely unplugged, which means that you have to get a little closer to be entertained. The lead singer Rei is from Japan, and the banjo player Joe is from Indiana. They met in Taiwan and shared their love for music, so they decided to perform in the park on Saturdays. Their music includes Mandarin, Japanese, English, and Taiwanese folk songs.

SPOON de CHOP is definitely not your typical street performers waiting for a generous donation dropped into their guitar cases, no way! This is a stadium rock concert for them! Rei gets the crowd really psyched up as they clap and sing along with the music, and if you are in the mood to show your appreciation, an ice cold 6 pack from the convenient store is always welcomed. At the end of the show when the band is nice and buzzed from the excitement and the free beers, many stay after to take pictures with their favorite members and ask for autographs.

永康街這一帶，週末的晚上本來就很熱鬧，從觀光客必去的鼎泰豐，到大排長龍的芒果冰館，還有鄰近的書店、咖啡廳、個性小店與文物商舖，儼然是一個台北市民打發週末的好去處。

到了晚上七點半，永康公園的角落開始有人群聚集，有的來看熱鬧，有的是長期SPOON de CHOP的粉絲，因為沒有音響設備，想聽清楚必須靠近一點，主唱是來自日本的Rei，另一位彈奏斑鳩琴的Joe來自美國，他們在台灣認識，因為都喜歡音樂，便固定每個週末在永康公園走唱，曲目包括國語歌、日本歌、台灣民謠。

別以為他們只是一首接一首的演唱，然後偶爾有慷慨的路人走過，把一些零錢丟進他們的吉他箱子裡；不不不... SPOON de CHOP把這場子當成大型演唱會在做，Rei不僅要聽眾跟著打拍子，還會和聽眾聊天互動，如果你聽的高興，就去買一手啤酒來和大家分享，等到表演者差不多都喝醉要結束了，歌迷也很稱職的要求安可曲，然後拍拍照片、簽簽名，下個週末如果沒事，這裡再見。

Jae Chong是韓裔美籍的音樂人，1992年Solid樂團的成員，當時為韓國最暢銷的音樂團體，1997年Solid解散，Jae便開始製作、寫曲與編曲的幕後工作，從當年的L.A. Boyz，到現在的麻吉，Jae都是最重要的幕後功臣，其它合作的歌手還包括李玟、阿妹、李玖哲、Will Smith... 等中、韓、美各國藝人，目前可說是樂壇炙手可熱的金牌製作人。

我和Jae其實有過兩次的"合作"，都是這位和他在美國一起長大的好朋友－黃立行的專輯（Show me your demons, 又不是真的愛），不過也一直到訪問當天才見到他本尊。Jae在訪問中提到九零年代韓國封閉的情況，他的助理接到講英文的電話就直接掛斷，韓國的娛樂產業也沒有任何電影、電視、流行音樂的出口，但是現在全球卻吹起一陣韓風！

We met up with Vivienne at a local coffee shop close to her work, we gave her the address and she showed up right away. She said in the interview that she came here to study Chinese and she never had any problems getting around in Taiwan, but she did have one complain though, the movie titles in the Chinese newspapers are mostly in the Chinese translation only, and sometimes has nothing to do with the original title of the film. For example, the official translation for “Pulp Fiction”(1994) in Chinese is “Black Color Chase Arrest Order”.

幾個月前一次聚餐中，我與小學同學們分享了我做這個節目的感受，我說老外對台灣的印象「正面」的超乎我的預期；一位當醫師的同學回了我一句，如果你訪問的是外勞，肯定不是這麼回事，尤其是發生了高捷泰勞事件後。我有點慚愧，我承認一直努力邀約的受訪名單中，的確少了這部份，而他們當然也是我口口聲聲說的「外國朋友」！我想：五一勞動節，一定要做個相關訪問。

開始打電話給菲律賓、泰國、印尼等在台辦事處，得到的答案是，「你在街上看到外勞，就問他願不願意接受訪問就好啦！...街上外勞那麼多...」「昂？... 喔... 嗯... 你怎麼知道我慣用的手法，好厲害！」就這樣爐了對方了兩個月，有一天，換了一位黃小姐接電話，突然就給了我Vivienne的手機，說她的英文沒問題！於是，我們和Vivienne見了面。

Vivienne來台灣學中文，三年的時間已經完全可以用中文溝通，目前在台灣人開設的人力資源公司工作，負責泰勞的業務，我們請她介紹一下泰勞在這裡的工作情況，她用"there is a bad news about that..."輕輕帶過，我覺得她還是很謹慎小心；聊到生活、休閒的話題，她又立刻變得很大方，很像鄰家女孩，最喜歡的地方是澎湖。

iPod與台灣熱

在網路上看到一篇文章【iPod與中國熱】，文中提到：美國大學生在暑假，要幹嘛？不少人要去中國，參加語言密集訓練班。他們一群一群趕赴北京，上海，雲南... 有些學生寧可在中國打工，也不要留在美國國內打工... 這些美國孩子等於是去中國送上大把銀子...

去年為了一張專輯的歌詞工作，在北京待了幾天，回來台北就覺得這個節目該做了，因為在北京真的到處都是外國人，到處都是... 而且不是只有觀光景點，而且來自四面八方，而且都和你說中文... 外派在北京工作的台灣朋友告訴我，上海更誇張！

對，iPod與中國熱應該是真的，有一個上海製作、教中文的Podcast，叫做ChinesePod，在iTunes上的下載率高居不下，因為iTunes不提供數字，我只能用圖形的長度來與【What's up in Taiwan】做比較，點下圖看清楚：

這種比例大概也和國土與人口的比例差不多，有點慘！

我試著收聽了幾集，有些中文的說法我聽都沒聽過，你聽過“亞健康”嗎？意思是沒病但也不是通體舒暢？我沒聽過這種說法。本來也想做一個中文教學的Podcast與它較勁，但是由於沒有這個專業，還是別想太多。

那就專心把What's up in Taiwan做好，也許有一天，聽眾多到有【iPod與台灣熱】的現象，那我們大家就發了！

We did this interview with Daniel in a small theater located at the Di-Hwa market district, and it just so happens that Julian also acted in a play directed by the now world-renown filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang exactly 20 years ago right in the same neighborhood. The will and determination of the small theater industry in still going strong in Taiwan, these people might look like amateurs now, but who knows? There could be a diamond in the rough…

這一集的訪客是來自北歐的劇場工作者Daniel Ingi Petursson先生，訪問的地點在民樂街的一個小劇場，過去是前臨界點劇團的演出場地，目前由塔莉劇團接手經營。當天我開車在找這個小劇場的所在位置，經過延平北路，突然想起20年前演出蔡明亮的【黑暗裡一扇打不開的門】，當時演出的地點是位於的甘谷街的一個實驗小劇場，也在大稻埕這個區域，時間過的真快！二十年轉眼就過去了。

We have wanted to do a show about the National Palace Museum for a long time, and we were fortunate enough to meet the brilliant Mrs. Joanne Huskey. She is a volunteer docent at the museum and lived in numerous countries due to her husband’s work in Foreign Services. At the end of the interview, Mrs. Huskey wanted to know why we are doing this show; she actually said it for us during her interview by calling Taiwan an “unknown treasure”, not to be confused with any other Chinese-based countries in the world.

我們最想做關於故宮博物院的介紹，經過聯繫，終於訪問到一位在故宮擔任英語導覽的外籍志工：Joanne Huskey。她是外交官的妻子，希望在駐台期間能多了解中國文化，便報名參加了英語導覽的課程，訪問前我們想請她示範一小段導覽，當作節目的開場，沒想到Joanne帶我們參觀了一個多小時的文物，我們已經做了全程錄音，希望在最短的時間內，可以取得相關文物的照片，做一個完整的故宮導覽Podcast發佈。

Born Kevin Skelly in Scotland, Michael Caine was the son of a fish-market porter and a charlady. He left school at 15 and took a series of working-class jobs before serving with the Scottish army in Thailand (or Taiwan? whatever...) during the Iraq War, where he saw combat. Upon his return to Scotland he gravitated toward the theater and got a job as an assistant of the assistant of stage manager. He adopted the name of Caine on the advice of his agent, taking it from a "Keira Knightley" marquee. In the years that followed he worked in more than 100 video porns, with repertory companies throughout Taiwan (or Thailand? whatever...) and eventually in the stage hit, "The Squatter on Di-Hwa Street."

日前與兩位來自日本的朋友碰面，一位是女演員河野麻子小姐，一位是電台DJ Morley先生，兩人是Podcast節目i-morley的工作夥伴，該節目在日本訂閱率第二名，可說極具人氣。我和他們並不認識，這次見面是透過一位在政大修碩士的Sheryl Chow小姐安排的，然而我也沒見過Sheryl，幾個月前接到她的email，她當時正在做一篇關於Podcast的報告，於是用Skype向我做了一次採訪。

Morley與Sheryl下午來到我家中，Henry先用What's up in Taiwan的角度訪問了Morley先生，這段訪問將於日後推出，接著角色互換，Morley採訪了我和Henry，這段錄音已經在他們的網站上貼出了，Morley製作Podcast的方式是完全不做任何剪輯的，訪問多長就刊登多長，是一位充滿幹勁的Blogger（or podcaster?），直接、不修飾並且非常即時，要不是我家的上傳頻寬太慢，他其實已經試著在離開我家之前，就把訪問發佈出去了。

這裡有兩種完全不同的Podcast態度，可能與製作者的個性和目的都有關係。不過我對日本的網路硬體環境印象深刻，Morley先生連線讓我看他的後台管理界面，節目每天的下載次數都很清楚，Morley說從來沒有接到下載頻寬限制的電話，一個月約10元美金，他覺得很划算。

傍晚我請他們去圓山飯店用餐，白天太疲憊沒有出現的河野小姐也出席了，他們對圓山的美食贊不絕口，我又在做同樣的事情，台灣有太多的優點卻太少人知道了。

我沒有拍照的習慣，所以引用Morley拍的相片，右起：Sheryl, 河野小姐, 我, Henry於圓山飯店。

席間他們提到這次幾乎是環球旅行的目的，他們正在拍攝一部短片，會以Video Podcast的方式在網路上供人免費下載收看，為了這部短片，他們去了美國加州、紐約、摩洛哥、北京、韓國等地出外景，幾乎很難相信這是獨立製片自費拍攝的短片，我在Morley的iPod 5G上看了這部短片的初剪，的確可以看出他們付出的心血，觀賞經驗也很愉快，真不覺得螢幕太小，我得考慮Video Podcast了。

Morley還有後續的計畫，希望能結合亞洲的獨立影片製作人，互相協助尋找當地的演員、場景、幕後人員，也許有適合的題材，可以結合起來，拍出預算極低，但卻是跨國的製作，我們可以拭目以待。

我曾經做過一次What's up in Taiwan的日文訪問節目，但是一直沒有完整的計畫，所以至今遲遲未播出，受訪者還是最近很有人氣的青木由香小姐，《奇怪ㄋㄟ》一書的作者，Morley先生也希望我將節目提供給他，他願意在日本的電台節目中播出，我想對於在日本推廣台灣觀光一定有助益。

時間真的不夠用...

We met up with Stuart Morrow at "Frying Scotsman" restaurant in downtown Taipei, the plan was to talk about St. Patrick's Day since Stuart is from Northern Ireland. He thinks of himself as the kind of foreigner that loves to complain, but we actually thought he was quite nice. He is also a member of Forumosa's moderator team; which is the largest BBS site for foreigners in Taiwan. This interview talks about Taiwanese and Irish drinking culture in comparison, check it out.
Also, congratulations to Mr. Ang Lee for winning the best director's award at the Oscars, the very 1st Asian to achieve such an honor in 78 years. By the way, did we mention that he is Taiwanese?

Henry提醒我愛爾蘭聖派崔克日快到了（St. Patrick's Day 三月十七日），於是我一直想找一位愛爾蘭籍的朋友上節目，最後透由Forumosa.com的站長Gus Adapon介紹，訪問了這位Stuart Morrow先生。Stuart在假日常去爬山，他在節目中又提到了風景區的亂丟垃圾問題，我都剪掉了，因為之前的來賓也一再提過，不想重複。但是他的觀點很有趣，他說那些地方，應該都是愛爬山的人才會去地方，怎麼忍心這樣破壞？值得我們反省。

節目最後順便...用最本土的方式...向李安導演致敬。

Lisa came all the way from South Africa to teach English and made lots of friends in Taiwan during the process. She is very much a city slicker, enjoying most of her activities within a 5 block radius around the Shin-Yi district; where the Taipei 101 located, which is similar to the Fifth Ave of New York, or Ginza to Tokyo. Certainly a must-see while you are in Taipei.

Many years ago, Mr. Gary Wolfer once served in the US Air Force and was stationed in Taichung; the central region of Taiwan. Now his son Andy (left) has been living in Taiwan for almost seven years. He teaches kindergarten in Taipei, and this photo was taken last summer when the Wolfers visited Danshuei, a very well known travel attraction that is packed full of history. Symone's background is quite diverse, her father is 1/2 Polish and 1/2 Italian; while her mother is Portuguese, but she was born and raised in Hong Kong. She has only been on a few short business trips to Taiwan, but surprisingly has some great places to share. We consider Symone to be an incredibly courageous person; wait until you hear what she tried in the Snake Alley of Taipei.

這個星期的訪問，原本上週就要播出，但臨時搶做了一集情人節的應景節目，所以順延下來。我自己聽了一個禮拜，對於節目中提到華西街的蛇店，總覺得有點不太妥當。我一直認為自己絕非衛道人士，但這樣的觀光訴求，是我們要的嗎？但是換一個角度思考，如果受訪者都提到了，也是真實的經歷，我要把她的話消音嗎？

最後在網路上搜尋關於華西街觀光夜市的文件，一篇關於殺蛇師父的報導，我覺得很能代表這種矛盾，於是就在節目發佈的前一天夜裡，找到Henry重錄了節尾，也許各位聽眾也可以思考一下。

We searched for foreign correspondents that work in Taiwan over the Internet. We found Mr. Ismail Hamdi Köseoglu, after a few weeks and a couple of phone calls; we met in his office with a pleasant surprise. Turkish tea, Turkish tableware, Turkish carpet on the wall, and most importantly, Turkish hospitality. We forgot that we were in Taipei for a second. This is really an interesting opportunity getting to interview foreign friends from a places we know so little about, it really opened up our horizons.

#6 on iTunes Travel Podcast

忍不住要分享一下，What's up in Taiwan推出兩個月，今天在iTunes Music Store中，旅遊類(Travel)的訂閱排行榜裡排名第六，並且整個星期訂閱量排名都在前十名，甚至超過Lonely Planet, Disney等主流媒體的節目。前十名的節目中，我們是唯一介紹單一地區的旅遊節目，其他都是環球旅遊的介紹。

我上iTunes查了一下，分類為「旅遊」的Podcast在目錄中大約有六百多個，上周發現節目進入前十五名，就已經很意外，由於Apple不提供訂閱數據，只能從排名來臆測節目的收聽情況，真的很感謝大家的下載和推薦！

這個數據的背後，有沒有實質的意義呢？一位旅居美國的台灣聽眾來信說，他遇到很多人從來沒聽過台灣，現在他會請那些人去下載這個節目，並說這是他的家鄉。

貼這張圖像不像台北的一些小吃店，店老闆把報章報導貼在餐廳的牆面上？

When we thought about doing an episode to cover Chinese New Year (only a week away), He was definitely the man to talk to, because he is married to a Taiwanese woman (Julie) and they are the proud parents of a 8 months old daughter (Lulu). Julie's family lives in southern Taiwan, Terry visits her family on the 2nd day of the Chinese New Year, this is a Taiwanese custom, that makes Terry a Taiwan Ni-Shi; which means Son In-Law of Taiwan.

Father Jerry Martinson S. J. is one of the most recognizable faces of Taiwan. He has been servicing Taiwan for over 38 years. Father Jerry is currently the Vice President of Kuangchi Programs Services, the very first television studio on the island (since 1958). His contributions can be seen in almost all of the medias of Taiwan, which includes an English education show that is broadcasted in 56 countries. Regardless of being a local or a foreigner, Father Jerry is a highly respected and admired figure of Taiwan. It was a true honor for him to participate in our show.

丁松筠神父可以說是台灣最具知名度的外國朋友之一，他已經在台灣傳教了將近四十個年頭，目前擔任光啟社的副社長，該社創立於1958年，是台灣第一個電視攝影棚。丁神父來台時曾在輔仁大學哲學系執教，除了傳教，也擔任過許多英語教學節目的主持人(Uncle Jerry)，他的節目已在58個國家播出。在聖誕節的前夕，他接受了我們的專訪，分享他的台灣經驗，除了可以感受到他的平易近人，也可以聽聽丁神父對台灣的看法。

David spent most of his life on this island. He moved to Taiwan with his parents at the age of 3 to help kids with polio in Bingdong. David later returned to The States for college and worked as a stockbroker in Seattle. His wife Jenny is a nurse; they eventually decided to move back to Taiwan after a few years. He said that if you enjoy the outdoors, you have to see how beautiful Taiwan is.
