What a depressing podcast, I share your anger, however, there are always some bad apples in the barrel, I guess the only thing we could do is to keep going and don't let the bastards grind you down. ;-)

Until next time...

Hello,
Sorry if I'm being dumb but I don't understand how this very sad event affects WUIT. From what I've read in online news stories today, the bus's brakes gave out and that's why it crashed. It's horrible but I don't see why that would reflect badly on Taiwan's tourism in general.

Can someone help me please?

Yes Peter, from what I know the accident was an error created by the carelessness of men, the bus driver didn’t even have a valid license for driving the tour bus. In my opinion, this tragedy is caused by one wrong move which led to many others. The tourist industry’s negative competitions by continuing to lower their prices as well as their services, which resulted in doing nothing better than taking the tourists shopping, then receiving a portion of the profit from the shop owners, completely disregarding the quality of their services as well as the continue complaints from the tourists. Trying to make up the opportunity to do more shopping by speeding after filing the police report; This tragedy is due to a chain for irresponsible behaviors. While the majority of the citizens of Taiwan consider that we are a more advanced nation than China?

We also learn from the news that some of the travel agencies believe that there will be more than enough tourists from Mainland China In the near future, so regardless whether or not they are satisfied with the quality of the services; they probably would never return again, and there is plenty more where they came from anyways. Due to this mentality, they sell souvenirs to these tourists for 4 times that of the regular price; some of them are even fake products.

We really hate to bring this up, but this is the ugliness we are dealing with…

I think I know where you're coming from on that last podcast. I find Taiwan sometimes has this special way of setting you up and then knocking you down. Taiwan still has a lot of work to do.

Thanks for the reply, Julian! I understand your concerns. It's interesting to me (as an American) that you are worried about how the actions of the tourist industry reflect poorly on foreigners' impressions of Taiwan in general. I suppose I am just not used to worrying much about what other nations think of America. That's probably one of America's biggest problems right now, especially in light of what my country's leaders have been up to in the last few years.

Thanks for keeping the podcast going!

As a Taiwanese currently studying abroad, I can definetely understand your frustration. It seems for every person working hard to improve Taiwan and push us forward, there is always someone willing to cut corners and make a cheap buck at the expense of the rest of us.

It's frustrating, whether watching this sort of stuff from Taiwan, or looking back from abroad. Sometimes I even wonder why I don't just give up my Taiwanese passport, throw up my hands, call it quits, and give up on Taiwan for good.. But you know, as depressing as things can be sometimes, there is always reason for hope. You guys have done an excellent job with your podcasts, and your honesty in asking interviewees about both the good and the bad is refreshing. Things like what you guys are doing keep my faith in this island alive. Keep up the good work.

哎~~希望台灣的旅行業者不要再短視近利下去,如果台灣的形象在開放大陸觀光的這一兩年就被業者玩掉,那以後要怎麼走下去呢?確保一定的觀光品質才能走得長遠。
